About This Spot

Stepping into Craig’s Bakehouse in the heart of Marske-by-the-Sea is like finding a comforting little pause in the midst of your day. The moment you walk through its doors on High Street, the hum of friendly chatter and the inviting warmth from the ovens create a quietly vibrant atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow just enough to fully appreciate the simple joy of good food and genuine hospitality.

This snug café and bakery carries an ease that feels familiar yet thoughtfully refined, a space where locals linger over skillets still warm from the stove while visitors find delight in rubbing shoulders with the friendly staff and other patrons. The pace here is unhurried but purposeful, inviting you to savor the moment with something warming in hand—whether that’s a richly layered cappuccino or a beautifully balanced hot chocolate that feels like a gentle comfort.

Food at Craig’s Bakehouse never feels routine. Instead, each dish carries a sense of care and thoughtfully paired flavours—like the playful meeting of textures in a sourdough bacon sandwich or the way a skillet breakfast remains satisfyingly hot from first bite to last. The menu meanders beyond expectations, blending familiar favourites with unexpected touches, where something as simple as poached eggs on thick crusty sourdough becomes more than a meal—it’s a quietly memorable experience.

There’s an undeniable charm in how the bakehouse blends its seaside village setting with a keen attention to quality, making it a quiet beacon for both locals and those passing through. The friendly energy feels genuine—not rehearsed—and the service strikes that perfect balance of attentive and easygoing. It’s the kind of place where people don’t just come to eat but to linger and reconnect, whether over a satisfying skillet or a slice of cake that tempts you to save a bite for later.

Surrounded by the peaceful flow of Marske’s main street and just a short walk from the beach path, Craig’s Bakehouse embodies the relaxed rhythm and welcoming spirit of its coastal home. It’s a spot where meals linger like a remembered conversation, warmed by the kind of care that makes you want to return—not just for the food, but for the moments it quietly nurtures.

Yes a little on the pricier side, but you absolutely get what you pay for and a good breakfast these days tends to be around the £14 mark anyway. The breakfast was delicious and because it was served in a skillet, it stayed hot until the last bite. Blueberry and white chocolate choux bun looked as good as it tasted and my first latte in a long time that didn't taste like boiled milk. I highly recommend this nice little spot.

Lovely small place with friendly staff. I enjoyed the Poached eggs with bacon. Two small poached eggs with deep yolk and very little white. Plenty of really crispy bacon (as requested). On two tasty pieces of thick crusty fresh sourdough. All presented on very trendy crockery. My latte was also really nice. I took a piece of the salted caramel brownie with me for later. Very good brownie! The prices are not cheap, but the ingredients were clearly all very good quality so overall we really enjoyed everything we had and would definitely recommend this place.

Needed lunch in Marske (our first ever visit there!) and called in here as it was "top rated". That rating is no exaggeration, the food was absolutely delicious! The Persian Frittata was one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten and I'll be trying to recreate my own! The Mrs's Curried Sweet Potato soup was also delicious as was the sourdough. We followed up with a piece of cake, we just couldn't resist. All food is home made too! Service was friendly and fast. Can't wait to go back.

Edited November 2023 When I first visited in 2021 (see below) I had no idea quite how extraordinary Craig's was in comparision to other places in this region. Now after living in County Durham for just over a year I have had to come back, change my review and rave a bit more about this place. In terms of the affordability of the food versus the quality of the food Craig's is without doubt the best place I have found in my travels in North Yorkshire, County Durham, the Lake District and Northumberland. They use flavour and spice exquisitely, with unusual ingredients, delightful combinations and fantastic clarity. It is only a cafe, but the quality of the food here is unbeatable. Ox-tail and kimchi skillet? - heart-breakingly good! Cruffins? They make you want to cry with joy! 2021 review: I never imagined when we looked for a little cafe to get a good coffee in Marske-by-the-Sea that we were actually going to find such a gem! I was expecting standard crowd pleasers, but instead got really state of the art lunch and fab cakes made by someone who used to work with Benoit Blin (the judge on Bake Off The Professionals). The savoury lunches featured an interesting selection of vegetarian, vegan or meat options, with fashionable fermented items such as locally-produced kimchi bringing a bit of vavavoom to the dishes. The cakes all looked amazing and we enjoyed the varying flavours and texture of our macaron and financier. I was not expecting food of this quality in a little seasoning de cafe and it was a real treat! Some people may be surprised by the prices, but if you are know the difference between price and value you’ll appreciate the quality on display. Yum yum!

Great little cafe in the middle of Marske and very close to the beach path. Friendly staff, great food and quick service. We both had the poached eggs on sourdough with some sides, and they were fab.

Stopped off for mid morning coffee but was very easily coerced into a sausage sourdough sandwich (£7.50). Windows on one side open full width for high seated bar. Plenty of outdoor seating too. Delicious sausages and fresh, spongy sourdough bread. Family had sourdough blondie (almond and blueberry) and rich gooey brownie. Nice coffees too around £3
